A cape does what a veil does (the drama, the movement, the photograph) without the pins, the wind, or the worry about coverage. These are modest cape wedding dresses and cape gowns: hand-beaded capes, cape sleeves and draped trains on fully lined, long-sleeved gowns, made to your measurements in white, ivory, emerald, burgundy, navy and black.

Why hijabi brides love a cape

A veil was designed for a bare head and shoulders. Over a hijab it can look like two things competing, and a lace-edged veil on a satin hijab rarely matches. A cape solves all of it. It attaches at the shoulders of the gown, so it sits over the hijab rather than fighting it. It moves when you walk and lifts when you dance. And because it is part of the dress, it is the same fabric, the same white, the same beading as the gown underneath.

There's a practical reason too. A cape covers the back and the arms without a second layer. For brides who would otherwise be adding a bolero or a shrug to a gown that wasn't cut for them, a cape gown is the version that was designed covered in the first place.

Three kinds of cape, one standard of coverage

• Beaded capes. Khadija ($850) and Beyda ($950) carry hand-beaded embroidery on a flowing cape that falls from the shoulders. Khadija is the bridal version: high neckline, fully lined, hijab and veil included. Beyda comes in emerald green, burgundy and black, which makes it the henna-night or walima gown.
• Cape sleeves. Safa ($1,800, midnight blue floral embroidery) and Aleena ($2,800, all-over shimmer with angel sleeves) build the cape into the sleeve itself: a wide, sweeping line from shoulder to wrist that reads as a cape in motion and a sleeve in photographs.
• Draped capes with a train. Rana ($499) pairs a coordinating draped cape with a softly gathered skirt and an embellished cuff; Dua ($799) adds a sequinned cape to a chiffon skirt with a graceful train. Both were designed for the nikkah and engagement, and both are the gowns brides tell us they wore again.

Every gown here is long-sleeved and fully lined. The cape is never a cover for a sheer bodice. The bodice is already opaque.

Cape or veil?

You don't have to choose. Most of the white gowns ship with a matching veil and hijab (the product page says which), so you can wear the veil over the hijab for the ceremony and let the cape carry the reception. If you'd rather skip the veil entirely, a cape gown is the one silhouette where nobody will notice it's missing.
