Red is the oldest bridal colour there is. From a deep, jeweled crimson to a soft dusty rose, these are red modest wedding dresses, long-sleeved, fully lined and high-necked, for the walima, the reception, the mehndi, or the bride who was never going to wear white. Made to your measurements; each of the reds below comes with a matching hijab.

What does a red wedding dress mean?

Across South Asia, red is the bridal colour. It stands for joy, prosperity and the beginning of a marriage, and a bride in white can look, to an older relative, like she's dressed for the wrong occasion. In Turkish and Arab traditions red runs through the henna night, where the bride is veiled in red. In the West it reads as bold. For a Muslim bride in the US or Canada it's usually all three at once: tradition on one side of the family, celebration on the other, and a colour that photographs like nothing else.

None of that requires a bare back or a sheer sleeve. These gowns are red and covered. The colour is the statement, the coverage is not up for discussion.

The reds

  • Gul ($1,750): deep, rich red with jeweled embellishment that gleams against the dark fabric. The gown for the bride, in the words of its own description, "who has never been afraid to be seen."
  • Hafsa ($1,750): a refined red with a lighter hand on the jewels. Bold in the photograph, graceful in the room.
  • Zaina ($1,600): warm, feminine red, more romantic than dramatic, in a flowing silhouette that moves.
  • Amsah ($1,850): dusty rose with delicate floral detail: the soft red, and the one that flatters every skin tone.
  • Amani ($1,220): burgundy, with tone-on-tone beading down the bodice and along the edges of a floor-length cape. The deepest red here, and the one made for the henna night.

Add Beyda ($950) in burgundy if you want a beaded cape gown for the henna night in the same family of colour.

Which event is red for?

Most brides wear red for the walima or reception and white or ivory for the nikah. Our nikkah collection has the white gowns. Red is also the classic mehndi and henna-night colour, especially in Turkish families, so a red gown ordered for the reception often gets its first outing the night before. If you're planning both, order together and ask the bridal concierge to time the deliveries.

Which red for which skin tone?

A quick rule from our seamstresses: cool undertones carry the deep crimsons (Gul, Hafsa, Amani); warm and olive undertones glow in the softer, warmer reds (Zaina, Amsah). If you're unsure, tell us in the order notes and we'll send you fabric close-ups under daylight and under indoor light. Colours shift between the two, and the product photos can't show both.

Made to your measurements

Custom measurements or a standard size (XS–XXL); the measuring guide walks you through it. Standard production 8–10 weeks, express 4–6, rush from 3 weeks. Free standard shipping in the US. We also ship to Canada, Australia, the UK and 15 other countries in Europe; outside the US, any import duties or VAT are paid to the courier on delivery. Gul, Hafsa, Zaina, Amsah and Amani each come with a matching hijab.

The full story of red, from the South Asian walima to the Turkish henna night, is in what a red wedding dress means; the walima dress guide covers the event where red is most at home.
