Modest Engagement Dresses for Hijabis: What to Wear, Which Colours, Where to Buy

|Sarah Aktim

A modest engagement dress for a hijabi is a long, lined gown with full sleeves and a high closed neckline, in a colour that is not white and not the colour of the wedding dress to come. Blush, champagne, dusty rose, sage, powder blue and gold are the shades most brides choose; the silhouette is lighter than a bridal gown, with the embellishment kept to the bodice so the dress photographs well close up and can be worn again. This guide answers the questions hijabi brides ask before the engagement: what to wear, which colours photograph well, how dressed-up to be, what the hijab needs from the gown, and where to buy an engagement dress that was designed to be covered rather than altered to be.

What does a hijabi bride wear to her engagement?

A gown one step down from the wedding dress. The engagement (the khitbah, the mangni, the söz or nişan, depending on the family) is a formal event, often with a stage and a photographer, but it is not the wedding, and the dress should say so. That means colour rather than white, a lighter fabric and a smaller train than the bridal gown, and embellishment concentrated at the bodice, collar and cuffs rather than across the whole dress. Because the engagement is the event with the most close-up photographs, of the ring, the hands and the couple seated together, the collar and the sleeves matter more than the skirt. A high closed collar with beading gives the hijab a clean line to sit against, and cuffs with detail frame the hands in every ring photograph.

The shape most brides land on is an A-line or a softly gathered gown with a shoulder drape, cape sleeves or sheer sleeve panels, which give movement in the entrance photographs without the weight of a full cape. Our guide to what a Muslim bride wears covers how the engagement fits with the nikkah, henna night and walima.

What colour should an engagement dress be?

Any colour except white and the wedding colour. In practice the engagement palette is soft: blush, champagne, dusty rose, sage, powder blue, lilac, pale gold. These photograph well against most skin tones in indoor evening light, they read as celebratory without competing with the wedding gown, and they sit comfortably beside a fiancé in a dark suit. Deeper colours (emerald, navy, burgundy, deep pink) are worn too, especially for evening engagements and in families where the henna night will be in the traditional colour and the engagement is the bride's chance to wear a jewel tone.

Two practical points. First, if the wedding gown will be white, a champagne or blush engagement dress keeps the engagement photographs distinct from the wedding photographs. Second, if the wedding will be in colour, as many South Asian weddings are, the engagement is often the event where the bride wears a pale or pastel gown instead, for the same reason.

How formal should an engagement dress be?

As formal as the room. A small engagement at home with both families is a long dress in a good fabric with one detail; a hall engagement with two hundred guests and a stage is a gown with a train, a cape and beadwork. The mistake in both directions is the same: a bride at a home engagement in a ball gown looks dressed for a different event, and a bride on a stage in a plain maxi disappears in the photographs. Ask what the venue is, how many guests, and whether there will be a professional photographer, and dress to that. If you are unsure, a gown with embellishment at the bodice and a plain skirt scales in both directions: quiet when seated, formal when standing.

What does the hijab need from an engagement dress?

The same three things as a wedding gown: a collar high enough that the scarf tucks inside it, sleeves to the wrist, and a back closed to the neck. For the engagement specifically, the hijab is usually styled more softly than for the nikkah, often in a lighter fabric with some volume, and sometimes with a small headpiece or jewellery, since the engagement photographs are close and the wedding day's veil is not yet in play. That makes the collar the most important detail of the gown: it is the frame under the hijab in every photograph. A beaded or embroidered collar in the same tone as the dress does most of the work of a necklace. Our guide to hijab wedding styles shows eight ways to wear the scarf over a high collar, and most of them suit the engagement as well as the wedding.

Where should I get my engagement dress?

This is the question hijabi brides ask on forums more than any other, and the honest answer is that the shops near you probably do not have one. Bridal boutiques stock white; department stores and evening-wear brands stock sleeveless. Most hijabi brides buy the engagement dress online, from one of three places. Turkish and Gulf evening-wear sites sell embellished hijab gowns in standard sizes, shipped internationally with duties on arrival and a size chart to interpret. Marketplaces have the widest range and the widest spread of quality. And made-to-measure modest bridal makers, which is what we are, sew the gown to your measurements in a colour and cut designed for the hijab from the start. The questions to ask any of them are the same as for a wedding gown: is it lined, does the collar and the back close, is the size standard or measured, how long does it take, and who pays duties. Our guide to buying a hijab wedding dress online goes through them one by one.

How much does a modest engagement dress cost?

A made-to-measure engagement gown costs $499 to $1,000 in the lighter styles most brides choose and $1,600 to $1,900 for a bridal-weight gown in colour. Evening-wear sites sell embellished hijab gowns at $150 to $600 in standard sizes before shipping, duties and alterations. Boutique evening gowns altered for coverage land at $800 to $2,000. From our collection, the Rana ($499, champagne) is the engagement gown at the light end; the Dua ($799, midnight blue) and Bushra ($980, dusty blue with hijab) are the middle; and the Safa ($1,800, midnight blue), Amsah ($1,850, dusty rose) and Zaynab ($1,750, deep pink) are the gowns for a stage engagement or a bride who will wear the same dress to the henna night. All are sewn to your measurements; the Bushra, Safa, Amsah and Zaynab include the matching hijab.

Can you wear the engagement dress again?

Yes, and choosing one you will is the best argument for spending a little more on it. An engagement gown in a soft colour with sleeves is exactly what a hijabi guest wears to other people's weddings, to the walima of a friend, to an Eid dinner or a graduation. The gowns that get worn again are the ones without a train, with embellishment that reads as formal rather than bridal, and in a colour that is not tied to one event. That is most of the engagement palette. The gowns that do not get worn again are white ones, which is one more reason the engagement dress should not be.

Ordering an engagement dress in time

Engagements are often arranged with less notice than weddings, which is the one place made-to-measure works against you. Our standard production is 8 to 10 weeks, with express and rush options at checkout, so count back from the date before you fall in love with a gown. Send the ten measurements from the measuring guide, and if the wedding gown will come from us too, order both at once so the measurements are taken once. The nikkah and engagement dresses collection is the place to start; every product page lists the price, what is included and the timeline.
