High Neck Wedding Dresses: The Five Necklines, and the Hairstyles and Hijab Styles That Suit Them

|Sarah Aktim

A high neck wedding dress is any gown whose neckline sits at or above the collarbone, and there are five distinct versions: the closed stand collar, the beaded jewel or crew neck, the high-neck yoke, the illusion high neck, and the high halter. They look similar in a thumbnail and behave very differently on the day, in what they cover, how they sit with hair or a hijab, and what they need underneath. This guide explains each neckline, which ones actually work with a hijab, the hairstyles that suit a high neck, how to wear jewellery with one, and how to choose between the high-neck gowns for a nikkah, a walima or a winter wedding.

What are the types of high neck wedding dress?

The closed stand collar

A band collar that stands up around the neck and closes at the back, sometimes called a mandarin or a funnel neck when it is taller. It is the most covered of the five, the cleanest line under a hijab, and the one that reads as most architectural. It suits satin, crepe and lined chiffon, and it needs a closed back to make sense. The Khadija ($850) has a closed stand collar above hand-beaded floral embroidery; the Maryam ($1,600) has a beaded high collar over smooth satin.

The beaded jewel neck

A rounded neckline that sits at the base of the throat, finished in beading or lace so the collar becomes the gown's main detail. It is softer than a stand collar, the most common high neck in modest bridal, and the one that photographs best in close-ups because the beading frames the face. The Zehra ($2,100) and Almas ($1,750) are beaded high collars over white; the Shamaal ($1,900) has an embellished high neckline with long sleeves in shimmering beadwork.

The high-neck yoke

A panel of beading, lace or embroidery across the shoulders and upper chest that rises to a high neck, over a plainer gown. The yoke does the work of a necklace and a collar at once and gives a plain fabric somewhere for the eye to rest. The Fatima ($900) has a beaded high-neck yoke over a soft, fluid fall of fabric.

The illusion high neck

A sheer panel of tulle or lace from the top of a lower bodice up to a high neckline, so the gown looks high-necked from a distance and shows skin through the mesh up close. It is the high neck of mainstream bridal and the one that is not modest unless the illusion panel is lined, which defeats its purpose. If you want a high neck for coverage, this is the one to avoid or to have lined; if you want it for the line only, it works.

The high halter

A high neckline attached to a band around the neck, with the shoulders and usually the back bare. It gives the height at the throat without the sleeves and is a summer and evening choice. It does not work with a hijab, because the shoulders are open, and it is not modest in the sense this site means; it is listed here because brides searching for high-neck gowns find it and should know what it is.

Which high neck works with a hijab?

The stand collar, the beaded jewel neck and the yoke, provided the back closes to the neck too. The hijab tucks inside the collar so there is no gap of skin at the throat, which is the whole point of a high neck for a hijabi bride, and a closed back means nothing shows when the hijab is pinned forward. The illusion high neck works only if lined; the high halter does not work at all. Every gown in our high neck and long sleeve wedding dresses collection is one of the first three, closed at the back, with sleeves to the wrist. Our guide to hijab wedding styles shows eight wraps over a high collar, and bridal hijab or veil covers how the veil sits over it.

What hairstyle suits a high neck wedding dress?

Hair up, or hair back. A high neck fills the space between the jaw and the shoulders, which is the space long loose hair normally occupies, so hair down over a high collar hides the collar and crowds the face. The hairstyles that work with a high neck all clear the neckline.

  • The low bun or chignon. The classic pairing. It sits at the nape, just above the collar, and leaves the neckline and the shoulders of the gown fully visible. Smooth for a satin stand collar, softer and textured for a lace or beaded one.
  • The high bun or top knot. Lengthens the neck, which a high collar can shorten, and suits a stand or funnel neck on a bride with a longer face. Leaves the ears and the collar clear for earrings.
  • The sleek low ponytail. Modern, and the best choice with a plain high neck in crepe or satin. Keep it smooth at the crown so it does not compete with the collar.
  • The half-up style. Works if the lower half is pulled to one side or kept thin, so the collar still reads. A full half-down over a beaded collar hides the beading.
  • Short hair. A high neck is the best neckline for a bob or a crop, because the neckline and the hair frame the face together with nothing in between.

Whatever the style, keep it clean at the sides. A high neck draws the eye to the jawline, and hair over the ears or the cheeks with a high collar closes the face in. For a hijabi bride the same logic applies to the wrap: close at the sides, height at the crown if any, nothing loose over the collar.

What jewellery goes with a high neck wedding dress?

No necklace. A high collar occupies the necklace's space, and a necklace over a stand collar or a beaded jewel neck fights it. Put the jewellery at the ears and the wrists instead: statement earrings if the collar is plain, small studs or drops if the collar is beaded, and a bracelet or a ring photograph over a cuff. A headpiece, a comb or a band works with an updo and a high neck because it sits above the frame rather than inside it. If the family expects a bridal necklace, choose a gown with a plain high collar and wear the necklace over it, or a gown with a yoke where the beading is the necklace.

High neck and long sleeves: the full coverage gown

The high neck and long sleeve combination is the most searched version of the high neck for a reason: it is the gown that is covered from the collar to the wrist to the floor, which is what a hijabi bride, a church bride, a temple bride and a winter bride are all looking for. What separates a good one from a plain one is where the detail goes. Beading on the collar and the cuffs, with a plain bodice between, keeps the gown light and frames the face and hands. Beading across the whole bodice and sleeves, over a plain skirt, is the stage version. Lace sleeves over a lining give texture without weight. The Nadia ($2,000) is a beaded high collar with a lace cape over a lace gown; the Amina ($1,900) is lace over chiffon with a long cape and a high neckline; the Eman ($2,100) puts floral lace over the bodice and cape panels with soft gathered sleeves.

Is a high neck wedding dress flattering?

On most brides, yes, with two adjustments. A high neck shortens the visible neck, so brides with a shorter neck or a rounder face do better with a beaded jewel neck than a tall funnel collar, and with the hair up. A high neck also draws attention to the shoulders, so a fitted sleeve set in at the natural shoulder line matters more than with any other neckline; a dropped or puffed shoulder on a high neck widens the frame. For a fuller bust a high neck with a defined waist (a belt, a seam, an empire line) keeps the proportion, where a high neck over an undefined bodice can read as a column. Made to measure removes most of the guesswork, because the collar height, the shoulder point and the waist are cut to your numbers rather than to a standard size.

Which high neck gown for which wedding?

For a nikkah or a small ceremony, a beaded jewel neck or a yoke over a plain gown: the Fatima, the Khadija, the Almas. For a walima or a stage, a high neck with the beading carried down the bodice and sleeves, with a cape or a train: the Shamaal, the Nadia, the Zehra. For a winter wedding, a stand collar in satin or a lace gown over a lining, with long fitted sleeves: the Maryam, the Aysha ($1,600), the Nadia. For a bride who is not wearing hijab and wants the line without the weight, a beaded jewel neck with an updo and no necklace.
